I was born and raised in Spokane, and like many people born and raised in Spokane, I looked forward to the day when I could head out on my own and move to Seattle. And like many people growing up, my parents took me to church. There I learned Bible stories about Moses, David, and Jesus, and a lot of expectations for my behavior. What I didn’t learn, however, was the Gospel. It just ricocheted off my hard heart. I was simply a lonely legalist, believing in a god who could comfort me when times were tough and expected me to behave myself. It wasn’t until my senior year of college at WSU that I learned the truth: we’ve all rebelled against God, but He has made reconciliation with Himself possible by the blood of Jesus Christ through faith in Him. I learned about grace.
Now that lonely legalist has been reborn into a new creation in Christ. Now I don't just know stuff about God, I know Him personally. Now I have been adopted into the family of God, loved by my brothers and sisters in Christ and (in my better moments) loving them. Now I am no longer a slave to the law but I can worship Christ in the freedom He has given me and enjoy the good gifts that He has placed in my life. Now I am finally moving over to the Seattle area, to help build a community of grace and truth rooted and grounded in the love of Jesus Christ.
Favorite verse: Hebrews 12:1-3
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted."
